Is AI journaling private? What to check before you write.
It depends on the app. Most AI journals store your entries on a server and send text to an AI provider when you ask for a reflection. Before you write anything personal, check five things: who stores your entries, whether they are encrypted, when text is sent to AI, what is attached to it, and whether you can export or delete everything.
1. Where are your entries stored?
A paper notebook lives in your drawer. An AI journal usually lives on a cloud service so it can sync between devices and run AI features. Look for the name of the hosting provider in the privacy policy and check that your entries are tied to your own account.
MyAIJournal stores entries in Google Firebase. Account-based access rules stop other users from reading your journal.
2. What kind of encryption is used?
Two terms matter here. Encryption in transit and at rest protects your text on its way to the server and while it is stored. End-to-end encryption goes further: only your device holds the key, so the service itself cannot read your entries.
An app that offers AI reflections on the server cannot also be fully end-to-end encrypted, because the AI has to read the text. Be wary of any app that claims both without explaining how. MyAIJournal uses service-managed encryption in transit and at rest, and says so on its privacy page.
3. When does text go to the AI?
Some apps analyse every entry automatically. Others only send text when you press a button. If you want some entries to stay away from AI entirely, choose an app where AI is opt-in for each request.
In MyAIJournal, writing and saving an entry does not send it to the AI service. Text is sent to Google’s AI service only when you ask for a prompt, a summary, a My Story reflection, or voice typing.
4. What is attached to the AI request?
Ask whether your name, email or account ID travel with the text. Even when they do not, the writing itself can identify you if it mentions names, places or other details. No journal app removes all of that automatically.
MyAIJournal does not attach your account name, sign-in email, user ID or payment details to AI requests. If you want extra distance, use initials for people and places in entries you plan to reflect on.
5. Can you take your journal with you?
Years of writing should not be locked inside one company. Check for an export option and a clear way to delete your account and data.
You can download your journal from Account in MyAIJournal and contact the team to request account or data deletion.
A quick checklist
- Is AI opt-in for each request, or automatic?
- Is the encryption end-to-end or service-managed?
- Which AI provider receives the text?
- Is your name or email attached to AI requests?
- Are analytics optional, and do they exclude journal content?
- Can you export everything and delete your account?
