Gratitude guide · MyAIJournal
How to keep a gratitude journal that stays specific.
To keep a gratitude journal, write down two or three specific things you appreciated, a few times a week, and say why each one mattered. Details work better than general thanks: “my sister called at lunch to ask about the interview” will mean more later than “family”.
Why specific beats general
Lists like “health, friends, coffee” get repetitive within a week, and repetition is where many gratitude journals stop. A specific moment makes you look back over the day properly, and it gives your future self a scene to remember.
A simple format
For each item, write one line on what happened and one on why it mattered.
The bus driver waited when he saw me running. It meant I got to the appointment on time and did not start the morning flustered.
This fictional entry takes under a minute and records a real moment rather than a category.
How often to write
You do not need to write every day. Two or three times a week can keep it fresh. Pick a fixed moment, such as Sunday evening or after your commute, so it becomes easy to remember.
12 gratitude prompts
- Who made today a little easier, and how?
- What is something you used today that you would miss?
- What made you laugh this week?
- Which part of your home did you enjoy today?
- What did your body let you do today?
- What problem turned out smaller than you feared?
- What did you learn from someone recently?
- Which meal this week would you happily eat again?
- What did you see outside that you liked?
- Who would you like to thank, and what would you say?
- What is going better now than it was a year ago?
- What small comfort are you looking forward to tomorrow?
On a hard day
Gratitude is not about pretending everything is fine. On a difficult day, you can write what was hard first and then add one small thing that helped, even if it was only a cup of tea or an early night. Both belong in the same entry.
Looking back
After a month, reread your entries. You may find the same people, places or routines coming up again and again. That tells you what to protect when life gets busy.
MyAIJournal keeps your entries on a calendar and a searchable timeline, and My Story can highlight recurring themes across a chosen period. For more ideas, try these 20 everyday prompts.
